Praise for Shakespeare’s Globe production of Edward II at The Sam Wanamaker Theatre 2019.
“
“Tom Stuart’s excellent, graceful Edward emerges as vain, defiant and painfully immature, but also genuinely in love” Financial Times
"It’s Stuart who makes the production so engaging, particularly in the latter parts, delivering lengthy, tricky speeches with a graceful naturalism and measured passion. Near the end, when struggling with the demand to resign his crown, he addresses one of his questions to the audience: “Are you moved?” he asks. We are, we are” The Stage
Stuart “excels as Edward II… He delivers his lengthy speeches in the second part with a sincere naturalism rather than dramatic fiery passion, exaggerating the human dimension of his character above the kingly one.” The Upcoming
“Stuart gives a moving portrait of an insecure man consumed by hopeless love” The Guardian

Praise for ‘I Am Not Myself These Days’

“An astonishingly, all-consuming performance’ - Fest
“An explosive and visceral performance with blistering intensity.” Seen Liverpool
The Scotsman – “Stuart is a charismatic presence and a fine actor and storyteller”
“Stuart delivers a tour de force performance.” Broadway Baby
"In Stuart’s intensely personal, vulnerable performance, nothing is off-limits – sex, love, abuse, visits to the toilet – all are described by him through words and movement. His performance style has an extraordinary generosity: it feels like his whole body and mind are open to the audience, allowing them to vicariously experience the extremes of glamour, excitement and agony that are Aqua’s life.” Revews Hub
darkly comic tour de force” Liverpool Echo

After Edward
Sam Wanamaker Theatre 2019
“I think it’s queer…And it’s about to get queerer”
Edward II wanders on to the empty stage, bloodied and confused. He has no idea where he is, or how he got here, but he does have an ominous feeling that something is wrong. As that feeling grows, so too does the threat on the other side of the auditorium doors.
Locked inside the theatre with some rather anarchic fellow inmates – Gertrude Stein, Harvey Milk and Quentin Crisp – Edward can’t escape what seems to be coming for him. . .
“There’s a touch of Stoppard and Pirandello to its teasing game-playing, a dash of Derek Jarman and of Tony Kushner’s Angels in America in its aesthetic of the fantastical. Joe Orton’s inky wit and Oscar Wilde’s aphorisms glitter among the dialogue. And, as Edward begins to interrogate his sense of self, to face the shame he has internalised as a homosexual in a heteronormative society and to reassert his place in the world, the dramatic tone turns increasingly to agitprop.” The Times
“A wild ride” Time Out ****
“Tom Stuart’s personal and political response to playing Edward II is poignant, funny and expertly performed” The Stage ****
“a forceful and fanciful drama by a fresh new talent” The Telegraph ****
“After Edward has absolutely everything anyone could want from a show… It’s brilliantly funny. It’s thought-provoking. It’s wickedly intelligent. It’s relevant. It’s important. And it’s totally accessible” The Upcoming *****
“it’s impossible to leave the theatre not feeling uplifted”
Broadway World *****

I Am Not Myself These Days
Based on Josh KIlmer-Purcell’s autobiography.
Fuel Productions 2016
A shockingly direct and heartbreakingly funny new play about love and self-discovery in the flashy, trashy New York of the 1990s.
Ad man by day and drag queen by night, Josh battles his own alcoholism while desperately trying to make his relationship work with Jack, a high-class rent boy addicted to crack.
I Am Not Myself These Days is the story of one man’s unconventional journey to self-acceptance that resonates far beyond the confines of the story.
“A mesmerising show which will smack you in the face and demand your attention”**** Three Weeks
“wonderfully profound tragicomedy.. gripping and evocative” ****The Skinny.
“I wasn’t expecting to be so moved by this, yet the emotions it stirred up lingered for the rest of the day, never quite leaving… profoundly affecting, and by turns warm, bitter, optimistic, cynical and deeply, profoundly human.”**** The Stage
“darkly comic tour de force” ****Liverpool Echo
“ a spectacle, a kind of glittery car wreck we can’t look away from even though there are times we want to.” ****Broadway Baby
